The College of Nursing at Rutgers University fosters opportunities for students of all backgrounds to achieve their BSN degrees while providing unparalleled opportunities for research within the framework of a truly diverse campus located within a densely populated part of the country.
About the University
Rutgers began the State University of New Jersey in 1766. The phrase “Jersey Roots, Global Reach” certainly seems appropriate. Over half the school’s nearly 400,000 alumni reside in New Jersey. However, the school ‘s student body of over 50,000 includes students from all 50 states and 125 countries.
A champion of diversity, Rutgers has been listed among the top 5 institutes of higher education for commitment to diversity, and its Newark campus has been named the most diverse, according to U.S. News and World Report, for 14 years running. More than half of first-year students are nonwhite and 50% of graduates are women. But the school’s commitment to diversity doesn’t stop with ethnicity and gender: RU houses over 40 cultural and religious and religious-cultural organizations while also being listed among the top 100 schools in the nation for LGBT students.
Notably, Rutgers is a highly ranked public research institution that promotes research by undergraduate students, including those pursuing a B.S. in nursing.
About the Nursing Program
In addition to research opportunities for undergraduate nursing students, something that sets Rutgers College of Nursing apart from other nursing schools is its many options for attaining a B.S. degree. It’s rare for a nursing school to have options for students with such varied experience, but this one does:
- For recent high school grads–a full, 4-year residential program
- For second-degree students—accelerated (14-month) and traditional residential programs, which can be combined with pursuit of an MS
- For who already have Associate degrees in nursing , an on-line RN to BS/MS program
In keeping with Rutger’s commitment to supporting students from diverse backgrounds, the School of Nursing has special programs to assist promising students from low-income and ethnic minority backgrounds. The Educational Opportunity Fund, or EOF, provides more than just financial support, as does its descendant, the Minority Nurse Leadership Institute (MNLI): both provide counseling and aim to assist students in overcoming potential pitfalls due to cultural or personal backgrounds.
