The University of Tennessee- Chattanooga is a public university located in the city of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Students find themselves in the heart of an affordable southern city, a city with a diverse and young population, a healthy economy, and a wealth of opportunities.
The University
The university is of medium size compared to other public universities (with approximately 10,000 undergraduate students), and it offers over 140 majors and concentrations. Of these, engineering, business, chemistry, accounting, and nursing are the most widely acclaimed.
The Program
The school of nursing at the University of Chattanooga is a program within a fully accredited university that offers paths for nearly all levels of nursing students. There are three ways to be admitted into the school’s nursing program. First, a student has the option of entering the program as a freshman. These students must be extremely qualified, having performed very well in high school, and they must enroll in specified courses during their first year. If they neglect to enroll in these courses, they are dropped from the nursing program.
A student’s second option for admission into the school of nursing at the University of Tennessee- Chattanooga is to enter as a transfer student. In order to gain admission to the program, transfer students must have completed a specified list of pre-nursing requirements, and they must be in good academic standing.
The third and final way a student may be admitted to the school of nursing is to enter the so-called “gateway program.” The gateway program presents a unique opportunity to those students who have already earned their Associate’s Degree and have become an RN. This program allows current RNs to earn their Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) through either a hybrid program (some online classes combined with some face-to-face interaction on campus) or a strictly online program (online classes, with the university’s many resources still fully available). The flexibility of the gateway program permits these students to earn their BSN and advance their careers while simultaneously earning a living working as an RN.
The University of Tennessee- Chattanooga offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, and doctoral (DNP) degrees in nursing. Master’s options include MSN, MSN Nurse Anesthesia, and MSN Nurse Family Practitioner. The rigorous DNP program was developed in conjunction with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and, according to the university’s website, aims to “prepare advanced practice nurses who translate science to improve population health through expert leadership.”
The University of Tennessee- Chattanooga provides a wide array of opportunities to prospective nursing students. The freshman entrance option, transfer option, and gateway program, combined with the various levels of degrees offered, ensure that nearly all nursing students will find themselves a good fit for the university.
